Chainsaw

We needed to create a production-quality parametric 3D model of a battery-powered chainsaw designed by our close partner, Tatic Designstudio. As well as building a complex solid model to define the plastic housing components, we had to implement a detailed surface texture parametrically for the handle area. The input data was provided in the form of design sketches and reference geometries.

Challenge: grip texture

The so-called “dimple pattern” plays an important role in identifying the product series. This refers to regularly spaced indentations in the handle area of the product.

The key challenge in implementing this element, which serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, lies in evenly distributing the indentations across the ergonomically curved surfaces of the handle.

A sophisticated system of parameters allows us not only to distribute the more than 2,000 features of a typical dimple pattern according to design specifications, but also to adjust their depth and orientation to meet the requirements of the precision injection molding process.
